Dana Jeanne Snyder

Passed away in the early hours Thanksgiving morning (11/28) with her beloved husband, Jack, at her side.

She bravely endured the devastating effects of rheumatoid arthritis for over sixty years with grace and uncommon courage. Dana was born in Washington, D.C. in 1954 to Preston and Jeanne Caruthers. She was raised and lived most of her life in Arlington, Virginia. A bright inquisitive soul, an avid reader, a natural beauty and an athlete, despite her diminutive size and health concerns. She was a cheerleader and tennis player. Attended Yorktown H.S. and Georgetown University where she studied to become a nurse. Her first marriage produced two sons, Justin and Preston Miller. She had a career as a nurse, followed by a second 25 year career in real estate management. She retired in 2004, but continued to dedicate her energy and brilliance to philanthropic and political causes she valued. Dana travelled all over the world in her lifetime and also, made it a priority to keep her body strong to enable her to recover from the never ending surgeries her degenerating joints required. In all, she was intuitive, generous, sensitive, loving and kind which resulted in her being cherished and dear to many, as she was their friend, confidant, and sagacious advisor.

She shared over 35 years of devout love with her husband, Jack Snyder. She was always happiest surrounded by “her boys”, and in recent years, treasured being “Mimi” to her seven grandchildren. Dana is survived by her husband, Jack Snyder, son Justin Miller (Laura Miller), son Preston Miller (Morgan Miller), father Preston Caruthers, brother Stephen Caruthers (LouAnn Caruthers), brother John Creasy (Kit Creasy), sister Lynn Shadyac (Richard Shadyac – deceased), sister Lisa Dawson (Porter Dawson) and caregiver Lydia Motanya. Eva DeCourcey

In Memoriam – Eva M. DeCourcey

Eva Marie DeCourcey passed away peacefully February 2022 in hospice care, surrounded by love.  Eva had been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer shockingly only a month prior.   Eva passed away just six months after her dear friend and fellow YHS 72 alum, Linda Wampler Vaughn.

Eva was a person of wide-ranging interests, talents, and accomplishments.  She hiked the Appalachian trail from New Hampshire to West Virginia by herself, she cooked delicious food, she earned a Masters of Eastern Medicine and opened an acupuncture practice, she helped pass Virginia legislation benefiting persons using a motorized wheelchair.

The year 2016 began with a traumatic fall and injury that left Eva a quadriplegic.   Eva worked extraordinarily hard to return to an active life and she appreciated the village of dear friends who helped her.  She continued to enjoy her time in nature outdoors, and pursued her interests in art, history, music, Eastern philosophy and medicine.  She never stopped learning, or teaching.

Eva made deep and enduring friendships with people she met and knew from varied facets of her experience, from six decades of her life.  Eva was curious, kind, funny, strong, and loving.   She was a superb friend and a great listener.  Eva shared though

tful insights about an extraordinary range of subjects.  She had a deep appreciation of nature and the comforts and pleasures of being outdoors.   Her brother Vince (YHS74), nieces and nephew and her legions of adoring friends will miss her forever.

Susan Dugan Weining

Susan Dugan Weinig, age 65, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2019 in her home in Warrenton, Virginia. Beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend, Susan leaves behind a mourning family, survived by her husband, William (Bill); two daughters, Alexandra and Emily; father, Obadiah Dugan; brother, Paul Dugan; and many extended family members and close friends.

Susan was born in Fairbanks, Alaska on February 2, 1954, but her family’s roots were in Charleston, South Carolina. She was the eldest of two children of Col. Obadiah and Susan Godbold Dugan and sister to Paul Blakeley. Her formative years were shaped by her father’s military career and resulting relocations around the country. This challenge strengthened her commitment to maintaining important relationships, including Barbara Hightower Bruno, her childhood neighbor and best friend, and dear college friends, Jane Fisher Vagt, Jan Phares, and Holly Harper Love.

She attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, graduating with a degree in Biology.  During school breaks, she was welcomed into the family of her beloved Aunt Sarah and Uncle Rieppe Mehrtens, alongside their daughter, Susan. After graduating, she worked as a medical technician before going on to earn a Master’s degree in Health Services Administration from George Washington University.

Susan and Bill married in 1983 and moved to Potomac, Maryland. They were blessed with two children, Alexandra and Emily. Susan balanced family and a demanding career in the healthcare industry. Her professional journey including working as a contractor for 8-A, enrolling lab systems for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, and consulting on applications at TDS. The majority of her successful career was spent working for Inova Health Systems, most recently as the Director of Cardiac & Vascular Outcomes.

Susan and Bill moved to Warrenton, Virginia in 2012. Following her retirement in 2015, she and Bill became involved in their new community, volunteering at Fauquier Springs hospital and St. Francis Episcopal Church, participating in a local Bible study group and book club, and enrolling in art and bridge lessons.

Susan was strong in her Christian faith. She was an active member in the church throughout her life, involved in Bible study, spending time caring for the sick, organizing food for the hungry, and pursuing her own relationship with God. She was taken too quickly from this earth, but in her time here, touched countless lives through her thoughtfulness, compassion, and incredible generosity to those around her. She was full of good humor and energy, and driven by her intellectual curiosity, pursued both lifelong learning and self improvement.

Her love of life will remain imprinted in our hearts and we pray for her as she joyfully reunites with Christ. Funeral services will be held on May 11 at 2 p.m. at St. Francis Episcopal Church at 10033 River Road, Potomac, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in her memory to the Star Gospel Mission, an organization founded by her great grandfather, at 474 Meeting St, Charleston, SC 29403. Jennifer HIX Rascoff
RASCOFF, Jennifer L.
January 20, 1954 - December 22, 2016

Jennifer "Jenny" Leonie Hix Rascoff, of Spokane, Washington, left this world peacefully and surrounded by family on the evening of December 22, 2016, concluding her long battle with cancer. She was just shy of her 63rd birthday.

Jenny was born on January 20, 1954 in New York City to Jane Bennetts Hix and John Daniel Hix. She grew up in Arlington, Virginia and graduated from Yorktown High School in Arlington in 1972. Shortly thereafter, Jenny met the love of her life, Jonathan. The couple would eventually depart upon a cross country adventure, touring the United States and Canada, and ultimately settling in Spokane, Washington. Spokane became their adoptive home and was the place where Jenny married, raised her children, worked, played at Sacheen Lake, and otherwise resided for the next 40 years.

Jenny's life was filled with friends, many of whom are considered to be "lifelong", such as Ed and Louise Peetz of Falls Church, Virginia, and Rich and Karen Kohn of Mead, Washington. Jenny's humor was edgy and sassy, and she always looked forward to spending time with friends. Jenny enjoyed the Northwest and had a particular fondness for Sacheen Lake, spending many sun-drenched days recreating there with her family, Rich and Karen Kohn, their children Kris and Katie, and Les and Rosemarie Beckstrom. Jenny also enjoyed travelling. Whether it was to Ireland to explore, the East Coast to visit friends, or to Winthrop, Washington for a blues festival, Jenny was ready to enjoy the adventure.

Jenny was never shy of expressing her opinion or standing up for causes she believed in. Before her health declined, Jenny would often attend Spokane's Pride Parade to support her friends and the community at large. She would volunteer her time and resources to political campaigns, and worked to support and uplift those in need of help. She volunteered for several years as an advocate for the program formerly known as the Rape Crisis Center, where she would counsel, comfort, and advocate on behalf of those who had suffered sexual assault.

Jenny was a member of Congregation Emanu-El and truly appreciated the spiritual guidance and friendships she found there, especially as her condition progressed. Jenny was a fighter and underwent many rounds of various aggressive cancer treatments before her body ultimately succumbed to terminal illness. Jenny is survived by her sister and friend, Deborah Green of Falls Church Virginia; her niece, Clara Green, of New York City; her nephew Barton Green of Merrick, New York; her sister-in-law Ann Gehrman and niece Sandy Knopow, both of Las Vegas; her son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin and Jessica Rascoff, of Spokane; her daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Chad Retter, of Spokane; her beloved husband Jonathan; and her three beautiful grandchildren (whom she adored and lovingly spoiled) Brynley Ann (3), Audrey Jane (2), and Chase Bennett (1). Jenny will be sorely missed.

The family wishes to thank friends and community members who have expressed their sympathies during this difficult time. A celebration of Jenny's life will be held at Spencer's Restaurant, located in the Doubletree Hotel at 322 N. Spokane Falls Blvd., on the afternoon of January 21 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friends and acquaintances of Jenny are encouraged to stop by for a bit, enjoy some refreshments, and exchange stories of our dearly departed. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Second Harvest Food Bank, 1234 E. Front Ave., Spokane, WA.

Andrew Lynn

Andrew Edison Lynn

Andrew Edison Lynn died suddenly and unexpectedly on Jan 18, 2018, at his home in Jefferson, MD. He was born Nov 25, 1954 in Ft Leavenworth, KS, an only child to Edison Albert Lynn, Jr and Dorothy Sharrow Lynn. Colonel Edison Lynn was a graduate of West Point; his mother was also an Army officer, and both served in WWII.

The Lynn family settled in Arlington, Virginia, where Andy graduated from Yorktown HS in 1972.  While in high school, he independently explored audio recording and electronics along with the budding world of computer science.  He attended UVA, Class of 1976, earning a degree in meteorology amidst following his interests in poetry, computers and whatever else caught his eye.

Andy worked as a computer systems architect with many DC area companies, as a consultant to governmental contractors, and in several businesses he started himself. A true Renaissance man - he never limited himself to a singular fascination. He read incessantly and could make sense of the most arcane of topics.  He studied theology and Roman history on his own for decades, and explored local and remote history through his travels in the US and Europe. He could fix anything and engage in a lively conversation on almost any topic. He loved all kinds of music and the beauty of nature, especially his beloved Great Falls, Virginia, where he had a home for several years.

His is survived by his former wife, Freyja Williams, his former sister in law, Thora Colot, his nephew Peter Colot Thorsson, as well as extended family in Iceland and Vermont. In addition to that family, his closest local ties were with Christopher and Christine Smith, their children Millie and Andrew, and Susan Walsh.  His life touched many, including a close-knit tribe of loving and devoted friends from his elementary school to college days. He was a brother to his peers, and an uncle to their children, adding his love and support to those around him. He also formed lasting relationships with neighbors, work colleagues and civic groups in which he was active.

We will miss his pithy emails, his passionate commentary on current events, and his profane reactions to the unkind, ungenerous and incompetent.  He was fond of sharing song lyrics in his communications that filled us with joy and spot-on poetic asides. We will miss being reminded of lyrics we’d forgotten, and being introduced to new words of expression.  We will miss his quirky, wry and insightful humor, and his embrace of modern ideas and media.

And while he was an integral part of his chosen family, he was also an only child who kept his own counsel and valued his self-reliance.  We are sad that his passing was alone, but it was in keeping with his fierce independence.  We know that his presence will abide as it touched so many parts of our lives, and the old soul that inhabited his body will continue to influence our hearts. Theoria, Poiesis, Praxis

David Carter Lynn

David Carter Lynn

David Carter Lynn, who passed away on September 21, 2016, was born in Washington, D.C. on December 6, 1954. When he was 9, his family moved from Herndon, VA to Arlington, VA, where he lived the rest of his life. After he left high school, he earned his GED and took college courses, mainly in art and history. As a young man, he was an apprentice potter under Jill Hinckley in Washington. He later worked construction and carpentry jobs, where his artistic abilities found expression in his fine woodworking. Eventually, he started his own contracting company, Wakefield Building Group, and developed a reputation for high-quality work. He ran Wakefield until last year, when he became too ill to work.

Dave was passionate about history, politics and fine food, not necessarily in that order. He and his wife Gilda were familiar faces at a number of restaurants in the DC area. For many years, he enjoyed kayaking on the Potomac. He read voraciously, especially books on World War II. He was frequently seen with his nose in a newspaper (The Washington Post or The New York Times), including while dining with family. Dave played a mean blues harmonica, sitting in with bands in the area, and enjoyed singing karaoke.

David is survived by his beloved wife, Rosa Gilda Lynn; his parents, Donald and Harriet Lynn; his sisters, Nancy Marmorella (Nicholas) and Annie Lynn; his nieces and nephew, Rebecca Olson, Teresa Marmorella and Anthony Marmorella; and his lifelong friend and adopted brother, Dr. Carlo Contoreggi. He will also be missed by his faithful Briard (French sheepdog), Jean Paul IV.

The family wishes to express appreciation for the compassionate care given by the oncology staff members at Inova Fairfax Hospital, Virginia Hospital Center and Inova Alexandria Hospital, as well as Dr. William Ershler and his staff, and care coordinator Linda Williamson.

A memorial service for Dave will be held Thursday, September 29 at 11:30 a.m., at The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, 2709 Hunter Mill Road, Oakton, VA, with lunch to follow at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org).

Larry Mahon

May 16, 1954 – December 31, 2022

Larry perfected the “Irish Goodbye.” Just when we thought he’d see a New Year, he left the party.

Lawrence John “Larry” Mahon, 68, died quietly on Saturday, December 31, 2022. His gift this holiday season was his brief, miraculous rally in order to enjoy the company of his children and friends at his bedside.

Surviving Larry are his pride and joy, “The Kids,” Colter, Conner and Emma Mahon; their mother, Sheryl Herndon, and his granddogs.  Larry and his surviving siblings, Jim, Ken, Martin, and Mary Mahon, enjoyed a typical 1950s-60’s childhood in Arlington, VA.

After graduating from Yorktown High School in 1972, Larry enrolled at VCU, making Richmond his home forever. As a career Commonwealth employee, he was most proud of his work successes at The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. Highlighting his unique personality were Larry’s diverse interests and hobbies. Trite but true, he was a Renaissance Man, an active participant in so many endeavors, a member of good standing in countless organizations and multiple, eclectic groups of friends, an entertaining storyteller, a man of endless “situations,” and Elvis.  He was everyone’s, Uncle Larry. He always sought adventure, even in simple activities of golfing, traveling, walking around his neighborhood to discover the history, watching sports, and playing and listening to live music. He maintained odd credentials, including Maker’s Mark Ambassador, Youngest Volunteer (age 20) at Big Brothers Organization, and a charter member of the DBA (Drinking Buddies of America).

Larry’s two most revered pastimes were trips with his biking buddies (or any time spent on his Harley) and his black powder rifle competitions. For more than 25 years he was a proud member of an award-winning marksman with the Washington Blue Rifles of the North-South Skirmish Association. All that said, Larry’s favorite people were Colter, Conner, and Emma, and his best times were spent either with them or listening to tales of their adventures.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at Affinity Funeral Service, 2720 Enterprise Parkway, Richmond, Virginia 23294.  A celebration of Larry’s life will follow at 3 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Those wishing to make a memorial contribution to honor Larry may do so at the American Cancer Society, cancer.org, or a charity of their choice.

Brian Marth

MARTH, Brian P., 62, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord Monday, August 8, 2016. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Pamela S. Marth; brother, Paul E. Marth (Phyllis); nephew, David B. Marth (Allison); and niece, Kristi J. Marth; stepson, Christopher Scott Porter (Sarah); and stepdaughter, Kristin P. Officer (Ray). Brian was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Alice and Paul W. Marth.

Brian had many interests and hobbies, with two in particular of which he was the most enthusiastic. While he played golf most of his adult life, it was after his retirement in 2011 that he really found his love for the game, playing several days a week with his regular group at Sycamore Creek. The second is the University of Richmond. For a short time following his graduation from the Business School, Brian served as a member of the UR Admissions Office. His real passion over the years was his love for University of Richmond athletics. He was a season ticket holder in football and basketball each year after his graduation in 1976.

And after his retirement, he enjoyed watching all Spider sport- if they were at home, he was there, and he traveled to many away games. Brian was a true advocate for the Spiders. He was a spirited volunteer, whether he was helping with promotional mailings, fund raising or recruiting Spider Club members. Brian was a former President and Board Member of the Spider Club. No one loved the Spiders more than Brian. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and his church.
His remains rest at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Derbyshire Baptist Church, 8800 Derbyshire Rd. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Linda Wampler Vaughan

Wife & mother of two daughters, Linda A (Wampler) Vaughan, passed away at her home after a little over a 2 ½ month battle with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer at the young age of 67 on August 6, 2021.

Linda is survived by her husband Roy of 42 years, her daughter Shannon (41), her daughter Ashley (38), her 2 granddaughters Reese (10) & Dakota (7), her son in law Steve, her grand fur babies Poppy & Lola, as well as her Dad Fred Wampler (98) & her 2 brothers Mike & Mark.

Born on March 8, 1954, in Arlington, VA to Fred & Betsy Wampler. Linda absolutely LOVED High School. A cheerleader all 4 years, she was proud to be a graduate of the class of 1972. She was really looking forward to attending her 50th reunion this year. Throughout the years she always remained in contact with her classmates & best girl group from Yorktown. In 1979, she met her husband Roy on the softball fields. Roy started off as the coach for her women’s team, turning into the love of her life. Not too long after, they got engaged on a camping trip with friends. Less than a year later they got married in December & started their lives together residing in Herndon, VA for over 20 years. That’s where they raised their 2 little girls & met their lifelong neighborhood friends. Linda ran an in-home daycare before beginning her long-life career in the medical field. While being a working Mom, she made sure she attended all her girls’ sporting events & activities. She, just like Roy, never missed a competition or a game. She was extremely hands on & fully involved in their lives. She was an amazing role model for Shannon & Ashley. She always put her family first, they were always her top priority. Linda was even like a 2nd Mom to many of her daughter’s friends. She was easy to talk to, trustworthy & supportive, a constant, a “go to” with open arms. She gave the best advice & all the love.

After her girls moved out of the house & on with their adult lives, Roy & Linda moved to Charlestown, WV for 5 years before retiring to the Wilmington, NC area. Fast forwarding a bit, they moved to Greensboro, NC to start their new journey of taking care of her parents’ full time. Retirement life was put on hold as her Mom’s dementia started to take over. Betsy ended up succumbing to her dementia, turned Alzheimer’s on January 1, 2022, not too long after Linda’s passing. They were for sure 2 peas in a pod who have now been reunited. Just before Covid hit, Linda, Roy, Betsy & Fred all moved into one house just a few miles away from their daughters. Roy & Linda became partners in Pickleball, a new sport they took up while living in Wilmington.

In the middle of May 2021, Linda & family learned of her cancer. Up until then she was completely healthy, vibrant & full of life. The impact of this news caused extreme shock & pure devastation to her family. This horrible disease took over rapidly. She passed away less than 3 months later.

Anyone who has met Linda over the years, knows that she lived for her family & always valued lifelong friendships. Once a friend, always a friend. She was a teammate to many in the dirt & on the court. Throughout her life she enjoyed playing all the sports. She was beyond beautiful inside & out. She was full of life, happiness, smiles & laughter. She loved to talk & talk & talk. She had the best stories, as well as the best memory. Linda truly lit up any room. She loved having sleepovers & making cookies with her 2 granddaughters, her cuddles were the best. If only she had more time with them. She was truly the best Grandma. Linda loved making Thanksgiving dinner & enjoyed being in the kitchen, friendly banter between her & her son in law included.  She will be missed by so many. We will never understand why she was taken from us so fast & so soon. She still had so much life ahead of her. We will never get over this. She leaves a huge hole in all our hearts.
